Madinah

Overview :

Madinah, which lays 447 km north of the Holy City of Makkah, is the second holiest city in Islam. It was to Madinah that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and his followers, faced by the hostility and persecution of the Makkah merchants, departed in 622 AD and, when the citizens of Madinah asked the Prophet to live amongst them and to arbitrate in their affairs it was in Madinah that the Islamic era began.

Madinah is then the city of the Prophet. As the place in which the Holy Qur'an was compiled and from which the Prophet's companions administered the affairs of the Muslim community, it was the seat of the first Islamic state. From Madinah, armies, spreading the word of the Prophet, were dispatched to Egypt, Persia and Syria. Madinah is also the place in which the Prophet, peace be upon him, was buried. Madinah currently has a population of more than 1,300,000 people (2006). It was originally known as Yathrib, an oasis city dating as far back as the 6th century. It was later inhabited by Jewish refugees who fled the aftermath of the war with the Romans in the 2nd century.

 

Major Attractions :

The Mosque of the Prophet (Masjid Al-Nabawi): The Prophet's Mosque where devout Muslims offer prayers. Muslims are allowed to visit the actual burial site of the Prophet and pay respects throughout the opening hours of the mosque also they can explore the Islamic Architecture at The Prophet's (p.b.u.h) Mosque.

Mountain of Uhud: Where the battle took place. There is also the burial ground of the 70 martyrs of this battle including the Prophet's uncle Hamza who is considered the greatest of all martyrs.

Qiblatayen Mosque: Where the Prophet was ordered by Allah to turn his face from Masjid Aqsa in Jerusalem to the Ka'aba in Makkah while performing prayers.

Quba Mosque: This is the first mosque in Islam.

 

 

Kaaki Museum: A specialized museum of Madinah. It contains visual media and pictures of the ciy.

there is another museum which is [Qimmat Al-Madinh museum].  The owner of this museum is Shaikh Salama Al-Johany who collected the pieces of the museum from an old hobby. The museum contains a large number of art crafts of Saudi traditions.

Uhud Mountain: the mountain of Uhud is the famous location of the battle between Muslims and Quraeesh and the burial site of many of the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) companions.

Visit The Islamic writings & Inscriptions sites: Inscriptions and old drawings as travelers and pilgrims used to try to leave their marks there. You will see some names, prayers, and other phrases that you will enjoy trying to figure out and understand.

Explore Madinah volcanoes: to know the details about the fire of the Hijaz the Prophet peace be upon him told Muslims about it.

The prophet peace be upon him told his companions that one of the Resurrection day signs is the fire of Hijaz the will starts there in will light the neck of camels in

Iraq.

Famous Meals :

Madinah is famous with its Hejazi cuisine and traditional meals like Arabic saliq rice, foul (beans), manto and yaghmosh.

What To Buy:

The streets leading to and around the Prophet's Mosque are lined with shops selling goods of every variety. Visitors to Madinah usually buy prayer rug, pictures of the holy city and mosques, religious cards, copies of the Holy Quran, clocks sounding Azan or the call to prayer, etc. as souvenirs to take back with them or as gifts for family and friends. The best of them to take back are Dates from Madinah and Madinah famous mint.

Best Time to Visit:

The best time (months) of the year to visit Madinah is between November and May since summer temperatures are considered not very hot although people visit Madinah around the year.
