Jeddah

Overview :

The Red Sea port of Jeddah, located mid-way along the Western coast of the Kingdom, is an active, thriving city and seaport. Jeddah's location on the ancient trade routes and its status as the seaport and airport for hajjis visiting the Holy City of Makkah have ensured that Jeddah is the most cosmopolitan of all Saudi Arabia's cities.

By the end of the 1970s, the population of Jeddah was estimated to be close to one million. By 1986, the estimated population was 1.4 million. With an estimated growth rate in excess of 10%, the population by 1993 had passed the two million.

The extraordinary growth of Jeddah, demanded by the Kingdom's development programs, has been achieved in a remarkably short period. (The expansion of the sea port's capacity is a case study of what can be achieved if the will, the management and the resources are available.) At the same time, aesthetic considerations have not been ignored. Jeddah now boasts some of the most beautiful examples of modern architecture in the world. Tree-lined avenues and the generous distribution of bronze sculptures attest to the success of the city's beautification program.

Major Attractions :

Al-Balad (OldTown): Jeddah's top sight is al-Balad, or the old town. The city wall has long since been torn down, but the old gates still mark where it once stood. Within you'll find a warren of ancient buildings and traditional souqs (markets), and the teetering, multi-storey coral houses that Jeddah is famous for. Unfortunately, coral is not a very durable building material, and most of the buildings are in disrepair.

King's Fountain: This 853-foot fountain is reputed to be the tallest fountain in the world, and is best appreciated when illuminated at night.

Makkah Gate: Makkah Gate is a historic place as well as a populous, business centre that is busy round the clock. Surrounded by mosques, it’s the old headquarters of SaudiAirport.

Biet Nassif: See a 700-year-old flag mast and 15th-century cannon at this restored building, one of several crumbling structures preserved by the government.

Open-air art: There was a focused civic effort at bringing art to Jeddah's public areas. As a result, Jeddah contains a large number of modern open air sculptures and works of art, typically situated in roundabouts, which makes it to this day the largest open-air art gallery in the world. Sculptures include works by a variety of artists, ranging from the obscure to international stars such as Jean/Hans Arp, César Baldaccini, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Joan Miró and Victor Vasarely and often depict elements of traditional Saudi culture - coffee pots, incense burners, palm trees, etc. The fact that Islamic tradition prohibits the depiction of living creatures, notably the human form, has made for some very creative modern art, ranging from the tasteful to the bizarre and downright hideous. These include a mounted defunct propeller plane, a giant geometry set, a giant bicycle, and a huge block of concrete with several cars protruding out of it at odd angles.

Other: The Jeddah Corniche offers spectacular views of the Red Sea the beach provides a lively place full of children on camels, Shetland ponies and 4-wheelers and there's plenty of art and activity to appeal to everyone. Check out the main shopping street on Tahliya for interesting wares, and if you're looking for good quality gold, try the Gold Souq where you can bargain for 18k and 24k gold by weight.

There may be about a dozen museums or collections in Jeddah. Some of these, showing a wide variety of educational aim and professionalism, are the Jeddah Regional Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography run by the Deputy Ministry of Antiquities and Museums, the JeddahMunicipalMuseum, the Naseef House, the private AbdulRaufHasanKhalilMuseum and the private ArtsHeritageMuseum

Things To Do:

Scuba diving: Scuba diving is a major draw for experts in the Kingdom. Because of Jeddah's location on the Red Sea, the flora and fauna are quite similar to what you'd see on Egypt's Red Sea Coast or off the Sinai Peninsula. Visibility can be spectacular (30-40m is common) and the corals are virtually untouched. There are plenty of interesting sites to explore most of the better dive sites are around one hour out to sea by speed boat.

AL-Balad: Reminiscent of the Arabian night's fairytales, this energetic marketplace with multi-storied mud brick and stone buildings sells everything from textiles and sparkling silver and gold ornaments to spices and honey.

Museums and collections: There may be about a dozen museums or collections in Jeddah. Some of these, showing a wide variety of educational aim and professionalism, are the Jeddah Regional Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography run by the Deputy Ministry of Antiquities and Museums, the JeddahMunicipalMuseum, the Naseef House, the private AbdulRaufHasanKhalilMuseum and the private ArtsHeritageMuseum.
